Self-love Through Touch: The Benefits of Masturbation

Self-love_Through_Touch_4.jpeg

Masturbation has long since been a cornerstone of shame, guilt, and disgust for many. Whether it’s for cultural, spiritual, or religious reasons, masturbation has been and continues to be a taboo subject. And considering that nearly 75% of women don’t orgasm through intercourse alone, and being a woman myself, I’m here to tell you…ain’t nobody got time for that. If you’re finding that you’re single and NOT ready to mingle, losing sleep due to stress/anxiety, or looking to get more in touch (pun intended) with your sexuality, then it’s time to uncover the secrets of masturbation.

A Brief History

Masturbation dates back hella far – I’m talking Ancient Egyptians far – and it was a normal act for most people to engage in. It was even used as a way to treat “hysteria” in women during the 1800s, because no one could’ve guessed that living a life void of any sexual satisfaction would make anyone go a little insane. But as time went on, this natural act took on an entirely different meaning across cultures and religions. Masturbation went from being normal to reprehensible – and that came with consequences.

Masturbation as a Form of Self-care

Today, masturbation isn’t scrutinized the way it used to be, but for many it’s still a heavily tabooed subject. If talking about it is taboo, chances are talking about sexuality in any capacity is also out of the question. That kind of extreme negative perception over a very basic and common human desire can lead to feelings of shame and guilt which can cause low self-esteem, body image issues, and psych-induced sexual dysfunction.

When you let go of the notion that masturbation will suddenly land you in the fiery pits of…well, you know, you’ll find that it comes with plenty of benefits. These include better self-esteem, a much better understanding of your own sexual desire and needs, and it even improves your sex life with your partner. You can view masturbation as a way of learning about, and taking the time to enjoy, yourself.  I mean, it’s literally making love…with yourself. If that ain’t self-love, I don’t know what is.

So, the next time you’re feeling anxious, fatigued, or overall low on energy, don’t be afraid to get handsy with yourself and watch the magic happen. And to make it just a bit easier for you, here’s short list of resources to get you started on your mastery to masturbation (again, pun intended):
