Getting to the Basics: It’s a Goals Thing
March is the only month that comes in with instructions. According to Google, the definition of march that best applies to us today, right now, is to “walk or proceed quickly and with determination.” Now quick is subjective but the key part is “with determination.” Move with intention. Move with a purpose. Move with an end goal in mind.
If you want to make it somewhere you have to know where you want to go. Think about it, while you might discover something great if you just got in your car and went, you could still spend a huge amount of time just sitting in your car, or end up in old places because you didn’t really think about where you wanted to go.
At the start of a therapeutic journey, I tell each new client that getting away from feeling horrible is great, but not the full picture. How will you know you have met a goal if you never actually set one? Sometimes we make lateral moves because we didn’t take the time to think about where we are and truly consider where we would like to be. We can be consumed by our excitement, fear, or impatience, that we make moves with no destination in mind and go in circles.
Think about where you would like to be at the end of this month. What would you like to feel? How would you like to interact with others? What do you want from the relationship you have with yourself, family, friends, and significant others? When we know what we want, put a date on it then we have a goal.
As you are planning and goal setting, keep in mind that we are moving forward with our truth. Be honest with yourself about what you want no matter how small or grandiose.
To get started, think about this Ashanti Proverb and what it means to you, then if you feel comfortable sharing, be sure to share it in the comments.

As we move into March, let’s go with some direction. It’s women’s history month and we are history in the making. Set your path, chart your goals and to guide you on your journey, pick up my workbook Cocoa Butter and Hair Grease: A Self-Love Journey through Hair and Skin.
